Mercerized Cotton – Strength, Shine and Superior Quality
Mercerized cotton undergoes a refined process where the fibers are treated with an alkaline solution under tension, followed by a gas flame finish that reduces fuzz and enhances the yarn’s smoothness and sheen.
This technique significantly improves dye uptake, resulting in vivid, long-lasting colors. Garments made from this yarn retain their shape and vibrancy even after repeated washes and extended wear.
Thanks to this transformation, mercerized cotton gains silk-like properties: it feels cool, soft, and sleek to the touch, and even delicate strands become tougher and less prone to breakage than untreated cotton.
Due to the complexity and cost of the process, only top-grade cotton varieties—primarily long-staple Egyptian cotton—are used. Low-quality fibers tend to snap under the required tension, making them unsuitable for mercerization.
Initially, the yarn might feel firm, but it softens noticeably after the first wash, becoming exceptionally comfortable against the skin.
Key Benefits:
- Enhanced durability and longevity
- Resistance to shrinking
- Richer, more vibrant colors
- Silky smooth texture
- Improved moisture absorption
How to recognize mercerized cotton?
- The surface feels sleek and polished, unlike the fuzziness of regular cotton
- Creases don’t form easily when the fabric is crumpled
