What Is a Dye Lot and Why It Matters When Choosing Yarn

If you've ever started a knitting or crochet project and noticed that part of your work looks slightly different in color—even though you used the same color yarn—you’ve likely encountered an issue with a different dye lot.

A dye lot (often labeled as lot on the yarn label) refers to the specific batch in which the yarn was dyed. Even if the same formula is used, subtle differences in temperature, dye time, or material can cause small variations in color. These differences can be even more noticeable in natural fiber yarns.

What Is a Dye Lot?

Manufacturers assign a unique number to each dye lot, which you'll usually find near the color name or code on the label. Two skeins of the same color but from different dye lots may look identical at first glance, but once knitted or crocheted, color differences may become apparent.

Why Is Matching the Dye Lot Important?

Even a slight variation in shade can affect the overall appearance of your project—especially for large items like sweaters, scarves, or blankets. Some parts of your garment may look lighter or darker, and unintentional “stripes” or color shifts can occur.

In the image below, you can see Alize Verona yarn, color 7700, but from two different dye lots—757930 and 105750. At first glance they look identical, but placed side by side, the difference is clearly visible.

How to Avoid Dye Lot Issues?

  • Buy enough yarn at once – calculate how much you need in advance and consider purchasing one extra skein just in case.
  • Check the labels – make sure all your skeins have the same dye lot number.
  • If you end up with different dye lots, try alternating skeins every few rows – this will help blend the colors more evenly and minimize the effect.
